DCMS
members meet with State Legislator.
Legislators will be pressured to raise the caps on medical malpractice
awards during the upcoming legislative session, according to State Rep.
Tony Goolsby (R-Dallas). Goolsby met with a small group of DCMS physicians
in April as part of the medical society’s legislative program. He
also pledged his support of physicians on scope of practice issues, saying,
“I don’t want anyone doing anything to me that they’re
not trained to do.” The group also discussed the state’s healthcare
system overall, with Goolsby saying that many of the problems with the
system are a result of illegal immigrants.

Special thanks to Drs Gordon Green, Sarah Helfand, Tya-Mae
Julien, and Brenda Mears for volunteering as judges for the Senior Medicine
and Health Category of the 2008 Beal Bank Regional Science and Engineering
Fair. The event provides an annual venue for Dallas-area middle and high
school students to demonstrate their scientific expertise. Over the last
50 years, the event has grown into one of the largest regional fairs in
the United States with approximately 800 students interviewed by more
than 300 judges from area businesses, professional organizations, and
schools. DCMS is proud to have been a part of the event since its inception.
