DCMS EVENTS
In late January or early February each year, we look forward to the DCMS Annual Dinner. This is a black tie optional event. In 2008, we celebrated the installation of the 125th president of DCMS, William J. Walton, MD. See his president's profile for more information about him. Annual Dinner photos can be viewed by clicking here. You can purchase prints through the Kodak Gallery website, or you can receive free digital images by emailing the number under the photo to Traci Beeson at tbeeson@dallas-cms.org.
Max Cole Leadership Award - 2008 Recipient Dr. Dennis Factor
Heath Award - 2008 Recipient Margaret Jordan
We also honored two other important people in Dallas’ family of medicine. The first was the recipient of the Max Cole Leadership Award, Dennis Factor, MD. This award represented by a crystal eagle, recognizes a DCMS member for outstanding service to the profession of medicine and the community. The first award was given to Max Cole, MD in 1985 for his numerous contributions on the local, state, and national levels – thus began the Max Cole Leadership Award.
This year’s deserving recipient, Dennis J. Factor, MD, attended the University of Dayton as a pre-med student and earned his medical degree at Marquette University School of Medicine in Milwaukee.
Dr Factor came to Baylor University Medical Center for a rotating internship and decided to stay to do his residency in obstetrics and gynecology.
After his residency, Dr Factor served in the US Air Force, practicing his specialty at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. He returned to private practice in Dallas, with staff appointments at Baylor, Presbyterian, and Parkland.
Dr Factor and his wife Fredye were married in 1979. A native Dallasite, Fredye has a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Southern Methodist University. Fredye is active in local and statewide nonprofit organizations, having served three terms on the TMA Foundation’s Board of Trustees, including work as chairman of the Development and Nominating committees. She has been active in Dallas’ Crystal Charity Ball since 2002, serving as chairman of the Luxury Silent Auction, Contribution Tickets, and Games and Prizes committees. She has served as president of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League and Alzheimer’s Association, and serves on the Arthritis Association, Circle Ten Boy Scouts of America and St. Cecilia Catholic School boards. In September 2006, Fredye was honored with the “Heart of Gold” award given by the Texas Medical Association Foundation.
The Factors are parents of four daughters, and proud grandparents of four grandsons and one granddaughter.
When they can find a little time to get away, the Factors enjoy fishing of every kind—from bass fishing at a retreat in East Texas to deep-sea fishing in Mexico. They have been fly fishing in New Zealand, as well. Also, Fredye has won six Orvis-sponsored fly-fishing tournaments for women in Idaho. They are the new owners of a log cabin in Red River, New Mexico, that has a trout stream running through the property and have plans to attend the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The Factors cochaired the 2006 Project Access Dallas Celebration, which raised a record-breaking $180,000. Their hard work continues to benefit this DCMS organization that provides health care for the working poor in our community.
Dr Factor was a member of the DCMS delegation to the Texas Medical Association beginning in 1984, and was chairman from 1989 to 1995. From 1996 to 1999, he served on the delegation to the American Medical Association.
Dr Factor was on the DCMS Board of Directors from 1989 to 1990 and served as the 111th DCMS president in 1994.
He has served on numerous committees at the state level, and has chaired the Council on Annual Session and Scientific Programming. In 1987, Dr Factor was the president of the Southwestern Gynecologic Assembly, and in 1998, he was president of the Texas Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
He has been a TMA Trustee since 1996 and served as chairman 2005-2006. Dr Factor became a member of the TMA Foundation board in 2006 and is currently vice president. Since 1997, he has been on the Texas Medical Liability Trust Board of Governors and served as chairman from 2004 to 2007.
Dr Factor is an Associate Professor on the faculty of UT Southwestern Medical School Department of Gynecology. He combines private practice with teaching responsibilities.
James T. Norwood, MD, 2007 DCMS president, was trained by Dr Factor, and, in recent years, they worked together on various organized medicine initiatives.
“Dennis Factor has cared for the medical profession with the same zeal and regard he has for his patients,” Dr Norwood said. “He cares for his patients with tenacity and compassion, and trains students and residents to do the same. This devotion and passion for his patients and students can be matched only by his service to the practice of medicine.”
Back to Annual Dinner Introduction
Second is this year’s recipient of the Millard J. and Robert L. Heath Award. In 1989, the Board of Directors of the Dallas County Medical Society established the Heath Award to recognize and honor a layperson that has provided outstanding leadership and service to medicine and to the community of Dallas. The Heath Award, represented by a crystal Rising Star, was given its name in recognition of the combined 51 years of service and exemplary stewardship of Millard J. Heath (1945 to 1975) and Robert L. Heath (1975 to 1996). The award is not required to be given every year, but only as the Board determines that individuals who have provided significant service merit such recognition. The 2008 recipient is Margaret Jordan.
The Heath Award honors a layperson who has provided outstanding leadership and service to medicine and the Dallas community.
Margaret H. Jordan, MPH, is the worthy recipient of this year’s Millard J. and Robert L. Heath Award from the Dallas County Medical Society.
Ms. Jordan is president & CEO of Dallas Medical Resource, a consortium of leaders from the business and healthcare community organized to develop the region as a major center for health care and to address issues affecting the viability of the health care delivery system.
Formerly, she was executive vice president for corporate affairs at Texas Health Resources in Arlington, where she was responsible for stakeholder relationship management, government relations, community health and benefit, system diversity initiatives, and the associated foundations.
She has been president & CEO of the Margaret Jordan Group, vice president of healthcare and employee services of Southern California Edison, vice president/regional manager of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Texas, and associate regional manager of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Georgia and Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Oakland, CA.
Ms. Jordan serves on the board of directors of several organizations including the American Hospital Association, Reliant Pharmaceuticals, the Mentor Corporation, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Women’s Museum, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.
She has received numerous prestigious awards during her professional career. She was named by Eclipse Magazine as one of “Three Dynamic Women … Reach Executive Status,” received the Whitney M. Young Jr. Humanitarian Award from the Urban League of Greater Dallas, was a 2004 Maura Award recipient sponsored by Southern Methodist University, and most recently was the 2007 Texas Trailblazer Award recipient sponsored by The Family Place of Dallas.
Ms. Jordan earned an MPH from the University of California Berkeley and a BSN from Georgetown University, and she is a graduate of the AMP, Harvard University School of Business.
“There are very few individuals in any field who truly make a significant difference in their profession, but Margaret Jordan is indeed just such a leader,” said Michael J. Darrouzet, CEO of the Dallas County Medical Society. “Even in the toughest situations, she creates an environment for positive change, encourages others to act, and then supports them along the way. After the effort is over, everyone feels they made it happen, while Margaret, having never asked for credit, certainly had more to do with the success than anyone.
“Margaret has an incredible depth of experience in the healthcare industry,” Mr. Darrouzet continued. “She has a unique set of leadership skills that brings out the best in others. We are so blessed to have her in our community. In her most recent work with Dallas Medical Resource and the regional Federal Reserve Board, she has been able to help articulate physicians’ perspectives on many key policy issues. She worked to include DCMS in critical discussions related to funding of care for the uninsured that resulted in DCMS’ position on the DMR Board of Trustees. She opened the door to physicians, and for that we owe her a great deal of thanks.”
Mr. Darrouzet concluded, “On the short list of recipients of the Millard J. and Robert L. Heath Award, Margaret Jordan is a stand-out.”
DCMS appreciates the support of BlueCross BlueShield of Texas, Frost Bank, TMA Insurance Trust, Texas Medical Liability Trust, and DCMS Circle of Friends.

The annual Medical Student Dinner is traditionally held the Sunday evening following the first week of medical school for the fall semester. This event honors freshmen medical students embarking on their career in medicine.
Medical school always will hold special memories for physicians. Because we know that medical school was an important time in a physician’s life, DCMS enjoys celebrating this with our members. 2007 marks our 32nd year to invite member physicians to sponsor students at our medical student dinner. Corporate sponsorship opportunity is always available for the reception at this event. The 2007 dinner was held Sunday, August 19, at the Renaissance Dallas Hotel at 2222 Stemmons Frwy. Students had just finished their first full week of class. This was a record event hosting 320 physicians, students and guest. Dr. Linda Nielsen, AMA president-elect, welcomed our guests as well.
Attendees include the new freshman class at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the practicing physicians who sponsor them. This event entertained over 320 people in 2007.
This dinner is hosted by the Dallas Academy of Medicine, the medical society’s charitable foundation. All contributions for student meals are tax deductible.
