30th Annual Medical Student Dinner

  by Deanna Wooten,
DCMS director of member services

Remember those intense years of medical school? How about that first week of class and the first major exam? Our annual Medical Student Dinner is the perfect setting for you to recollect and share your “war stories” with the newest class of medical students at UT Southwestern.

DCMS enjoys celebrating this special time; this is our 30th year to invite member physicians to sponsor students at our medical student dinner. Students will have been in classes for only the first week of at least 4 years of intense study. They are honored and humbled that you’ve taken the time to welcome them to your profession, and they’re eager to hear about your experiences surviving medical school and choosing a specialty.

By now you should have received the invitation to the Aug 21 dinner. If you’ve never attended or sponsored this event, join us this year! This dinner continues to be one of our most popular functions. Your $140 donation will provide dinner for yourself, your guest, and two students (or one student and spouse). You will sit with the students during dinner.

If you’re unable to attend, you still can participate. Please make a tax-deductible contribution to sponsor a student or two and continue this excellent tradition. The students are given a list of all sponsors who paid for their dinners, so your contribution will be directly acknowledged. The dinner is being hosted by the Dallas Academy of Medicine, the medical society’s charitable foundation. All contributions for student meals are tax deductible.

Following are a few recollections of this dinner from DCMS members who attended this dinner as UT Southwestern freshmen. They all agreed that the evening had a tremendous impact on them.

My table host took an active interest in the new students, later having us to dinner at his home, over to his office, and generally keeping up the friendship over the following med school years. It was great to get to know a practicing physician in Dallas, and to have a chance to informally visit with an upperclassman. It left a lasting impression.
– R.K. Rosen, MD (graduated 1980)

The dinner was one of the most memorable experiences early in medical school. It was a major moment in the transition into medical school. The interaction with physicians who were at many different stages of their career, and who were all there to support and encourage us, was a very positive experience. I look forward to participating in the future! Thanks!
– M.K. Schrader, MD (graduated 1998)

The student dinner was a nice way of welcoming the students to the medical community. I felt honored that the physicians took time to celebrate such a special event in the lives of the incoming students. It was a real treat to meet and talk about career choices and life experiences.
– E.K. Stehel, MD (graduated 1997)
