James Timothy Norwood, MD
New DCMS President for 2007

by James T. Norwood, MD
2007 DCMS President

James “Tim” Norwood, MD, is a native Texan, born in Texarkana. He completed his undergraduate degree in biology at Austin College in Sherman. While in college he met Cecilia, and they married between college and medical school. Dr Norwood attended Southwestern Medical School, where he performed research and co-authored articles about fallopian tube transport.

Dr Norwood completed his residency at Baylor University Medical Center in obstetrics and gynecology, and is board certified. He started his private practice at Baylor in 1984, where he continues to practice obstetrics, gynecology, infertility, and menopause management. While at Baylor he has been able to explore his two passions—medical education and quality patient care. His commitment to quality led him to serve on the Quality Assurance Committee for Southwest Physicians Associates in the mid-1980s and for Surgicare surgery center in the 1990s. He served as chair of the Quality Assurance Committee for his department and was a member of Baylor’s Professional Standards Committee. His devoted interest to quality care led him to earn certification by the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians in 1998.

Dr Norwood’s commitment to education has been no less intense with his active participation on the teaching staff for the residency program in obstetrics and gynecology at Baylor. As director of the residency program from 1999–2005, he developed and monitored the work-hour restrictions for resident education and the assessment of resident competencies. In addition, he wrote a manual on competency assessment that is used by many programs nationally and oversaw site visits by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. In 2005, he was honored with a teaching award fromthe Association of Professors in Gynecology and Obstetrics.

Dr Norwood has been a part of organized medicine since he joined TMA/DCMS as a resident in 1983. He has been a member of the Dallas delegation to TMA since 1992. Within TMA, he has chaired the Credentials Committee and the Reference Committee for Financial and Organizational Affairs. He served on the Reference Committee for Science and Education and the Physician Distribution and Healthcare Access Committee. Before becoming president of the Society, Dr Norwood served on its board of directors in 2002 and 2003.

Dr Norwood and his wife, Cecilia, have been together for more than 33 years—quite an accomplishment considering they met on a blind date and he ran out of money on their first date to a restaurant. Cecilia teaches at SMU, but prior to that was an executive with Southland Corp and later with EDS. Dr Norwood carries his passion for teaching into his personal life as he is committed to teaching his five nephews and niece how to fish. “I constantly am amazed at what a three- year-old can do with a pink 3-foot-long fishing rod and a piece of burned hot dog,” says Dr Norwood.

Dr Norwood enjoys fishing on Richland Chambers
Reservoir near Corsicana with his nephews and
niece—Taylor, Trevor and Kayla Stubbs.
